Design Application

A major global corporation determined their OEM supplier could not provide a new Laminator that would provide the capability for a new initiative, but also accommodate conversions to future technologies. They turned to Alexander & Associates for our special machine design expertise.

The objectives of this project were to add flexibility to the machinery to accommodate future technological upgrades. Another significant goal of this project was to reduce time for changeover, setup, and maintenance. Increased reliability of the machinery was also important.

Some of this effort included frame and platform design for second level access. Process rolls, web handling, web threading, drive system hydraulic roll loading and roll cleaning, complete power and control system including drives, PLC and HMI were essential components in the development of this machinery.

Our involvement in this project started in the definition phase and continued through design, fabrication and assembly, testing and shakedown, and finally, installation and start-up at the customer's plant.

HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Enable a new product upgrade to reach the market quicker and more cost effectively
  • Modular traversing subassemblies were designed to provide quick access to process rolls for removal, changeover, and maintenance
  • Roll removal time was reduced by 75%, which enables the changeover to be accomplished in a couple of hours as opposed to multiple shifts
  • Eliminated the need for optical alignment
  • Project was successfully completed on time and under budget
